It's more than just a day!
Every year, September 22 is international
"In Town, Without My Car!" day. It is intended
to encourage citizens to use alternate transportation
(for at least a day) rather than driving alone in a
car. The goal is to encourage residents in Gatineau
to make a permanent change to their transportation habits.
Although one day is good, taking
green transportation for the majority of your travel
throughout the year is better!
This helps to improve air quality, combat climate change
caused by greenhouse gases, reduce noise pollution and
save some money. This way, every day is a new opportunity
to reconsider your transportation choices!
So, whether you take
the bus, ride a bike, walk or carpool, join everyone
else who is on board… throughout the year!
2007 Edition
Because the 2007 edition of "In
Town, Without My Car!" fell on a Saturday, the
day was focused on family activities. The STO and its
partners joined forces with the soap box races on Main
Street to create an environmental area offering games,
photo sessions with children at the wheel of the hybrid
bus, free seedlings and Fleurs de macadam with their
colourful chalk drawings.
The STO's bus service was also FREE throughout the system,
giving citizens an opportunity to visit different cultural
attractions and recreation areas in the city. A "2
for 1" promotion on the general admission price
to the Canadian Museum of Civilization was also offered
for the day, and the STO gave away free passes for the
IMAX Theatre.
The Walk, Bike or Bus contest was back, with
numerous prizes to be won, namely a travel voucher worth
$2,000 that could be exchanged for a trip for two to
a destination of the winner's choice, show tickets and
much more
.

2006
Edition
The STO took advantage of the
opportunity to officially open two new incentive parking
facilities, the St-Dominique Park-and-Ride and the Hippodrome
Park-and-Ride. The Walk, Bike or Bus contest
was also launched, with a prize consisting of a travel
voucher worth $3,200 that could be exchanged for a trip
for two to a destination of the winner's choice. .

2005
Edition
Part of Laval Street in the downtown
Hull sector was closed to vehicle traffic and activities
were held in a festive atmosphere that included a magic
show, a hybrid bus on display, a streetcar wagon, free
seedlings and several other stands about the environment.

2004
Edition
This edition focused on raising
awareness about keeping reserved lanes clear. Activities
took place to ensure motorists knew about the rules
for reserved lanes, with valuable co-operation provided
by the police. The public could also take advantage
of the "2 for 1" fares on buses, and free
bus tickets were handed out to citizens.
