News in Brief

The Rapibus is in construction mode!

On November 30, attended by numerous dignitaries and guests, the Société de transport de l'Outaouais (STO) broke the ground in the symbolic sod turning to announce the start of construction on the Rapibus, a 15-km corridor exclusively for buses that will run east-west along the existing railway right-of-way through the heart of Gatineau. The Rapibus route will have 12 stations and a bicycle path next to the corridor. At a cost of $233.5 million, the Rapibus is the most extensive construction site to start in the Outaouais. The Rapibus service is scheduled to start in the fall of 2011.

The STO and the STM unveil the results of the UTSP

The Outaouais and Montreal transit corporations (STO and STM) unveiled the results of the Urban Transportation Showcase Program (UTSP) on June 3, 2009. This program, carried out with financial contributions from Transport Canada and the Quebec Ministry of Transport, and the participation of the cities of Gatineau and Montreal, provides support for projects being undertaken by different organizations in Canada in order to test sustainable transportation options.

Known as the Ligne verte (green route), the STO's project involved a set of measures to make public transit more appealing along the Gréber corridor, where seven regular buses and two hybrid diesel-electric buses were running.

All the measures introduced by the STO, including the two hybrid buses and the Ligne verte infrastructures, helped to reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 1,000 tonnes, which is equivalent to removing 200 vehicles from the roads in the region. The UTSP was a success every leg of the way!

Launch of the TAG Showcase at the STO

On May 27, 2009, Les Industries TAG Rive-Sud unveiled the controlled vacuum fare collection system installed in the STO's facilities. This innovative technology does not require any money to be handled. The system allows data to be obtained in real time, from the revenues that have been collected in the buses until the end of the cycle. The new fare collection system will save time, effort and money.

"The Société is pleased to be a technology showcase for other public transit corporations given that it already uses fare boxes made by TAG," stated Patrice Martin, Chairman of the STO.
