If you need to take more than one bus to reach your destination, ask the driver for a transfer when you first board the bus.

If you plan to take the bus more frequently, passes are a more advantageous option.

Multi

The Multi is a smart card that is:

  • Personalized and not transferable because your name and photo appear on it. You are therefore the only person who can use your card;
  • Loaded with a monthly STO pass giving you access to the routes in our system.

Conditions for obtaining a Multi

You can get your Multi card only at one of the service points for $8 (non-taxable).

Children status must be renewed every September at a cost of $8 (tax exempt).

The following supporting documents are required to obtain a card:

  • Proof of age and residency in Quebec (under 11 years of age on September 1 of the year of issue) such as Quebec health insurance card (issued by the RAMQ).

Recharging the card

Once the Multi card has been issued, it can be recharged at any time at one of the service points, one of the recharging sites or on line in My Profile.

Lost, damaged, stolen or defective card

  • If your card is lost, damaged or stolen, go to one of the service points to get a new Multi card and its contents for a fee of $10 (non-taxable). If your card had no cash value, a fee of $8 (non-taxable) is payable.
  • If your Multi card is defective, it will be replaced at no charge.

Monthly pass

Unlimited travel for the entire month!

The monthly pass is loaded on the Multi. It gives you unlimited travel on the STO system for the entire month (from the first to the last day of the month). It is ideal if you take the bus often in a month.

You wish to get a monthly pass for the first time?

Check the conditions for obtaining a Multi before you go to one of the 4 service points to get a Multi on which your pass will be loaded.

You already have a Multi?

You can recharge the card at any time at one of the 4 service points, one of the recharging sites or on line in My Profile. You can even recharge your pass for several months. Avoid the line-ups and recharge your card before the end of the month.

Passes are not refundable after their start date.

E-Wallet

Simple and easy to use, it can be loaded on your Multi card at your usual retail outlet or on line in My Profile. You can pay your occasional trips by means of an e-fare.

The e-wallet:

  • More savings
  • No need to have change to take a bus
  • Paperless transfers
  • Can be transferred if it is lost or stolen
  • Can be loaded on line in My Profile

You can put from $10 to $110 in your e-wallet.
(At some recharging sites, the e-wallet can be loaded in dollar increments only.)

When you pass your card in front of the reader when boarding the bus, the reader:

  • Confirms that your trip is valid
  • Debits the fare from your e-wallet
  • Displays the balance available on your e-wallet

A fare debited from your e-wallet entitles you to an e-transfer that is valid for 2 hours starting from when you first boarded an STO bus. Simply pass your card in front of the reader again during the validity period and the transfer will be accepted.

See the Frequently Asked Questions for more details about the e-wallet.

The Occasional Multi (E-wallet)

Simple and easy to use, as its name suggests, this pass is ideal for occasional trips! It's an e-wallet on a non personalized Multi card. Wich means it's transferable and it can be shared easily among riders in the same family. No matter who uses it, the Occasional Multi lets you pay for your trip using an e-fare. It can be loaded at the service points and retail outlets.

The Occasional Multi is the Multi that lends itself well!

In addition:

  • It is cheaper than a paper ticket
  • There is no need for change to take a bus
  • Paperless transfers
  • the balance is protected if it is lost or stolen
  • It can be loaded at one of the service points and recharging sites

The initial cost is $2. You can then put from $10 to $110 on it and recharge it as often as you want, so be sure to keep it!

By tapping the card on the reader when boarding the bus, the reader:

  • Confirms that your trip is valid
  • Debits the fare from your Multi card
  • Displays the balance available on your Occasional Multi

A fare debited from your Multi entitles you to an e-transfer that is valid for 2 hours starting from when you first boarded an STO bus. Simply tap the reader again during the validity period and the transfer will be accepted.

Cash

Cash fare is a practical solution when you have to take the bus unexpectedly.

The exact fare in change is required. Pennies and bank notes are not accepted.

Transfer

If you need to take more than one bus to reach your destination and are not using a Multi card, ask the driver for a transfer when you first board the bus.

You will not have to pay with an additional ticket or cash fare to take another bus.

The transfer is valid for 2 hours calculated from the time the bus leaves the terminus on the current trip.

New transfer with a QR code

Since June 23, a new transfer was introduced on STO buses.

How is it different? It has a QR code, which is a type of barcode consisting of black squares arranged in a square grid on a white background.

This QR code will allow STO riders to access the O-Train stations. To use it, the transfer will be valid for 2 hours within which riders must scan the barcode at one of the fare gates at the stations.

Riders can now also use this transfer with the QR code to travel on the Trillium Line in Ottawa's light rail system, and will be able to do the same once the Confederation line is operational.

Visit How will I get through the gate to learn more.

Follow the usual process on STO and OC Transpo buses

For those who will be using this new transfer to travel on an STO or OC Transpo bus, note that nothing will change. When boarding, continue to show it to the driver as you have already been doing. Its validity period will also remain the same, which is 2 hours calculated from the time the bus leaves the terminus on the current trip.
