If you need to take more than one bus to reach your destination, ask the driver for a transfer when you first board the bus.
If you plan to take the bus more frequently, passes are a more advantageous option.
Multi
The Multi is a smart card that is:
- Personalized and not transferable because your name, rider category and photo appear on it. You are therefore the only person who can use your card;
- Loaded with an STO pass giving you access to the routes in our system;
- Offers an e-wallet allowing you to pay your fare or to pay the required supplements;
- Used as an ID card because it confirms your right to pay the Senior cash fare.
Conditions for obtaining a Multi
You can get your Multi card exclusively at one of the 3 service points or at the issuing centre for $8 (non-taxable). Only residents of Quebec are eligible for the card.
The following supporting documents are required to obtain a card:
- Quebec health insurance card (issued by the RAMQ) or Quebec driver's licence (issued by the SAAQ);
- Proof of age over 65 years.
Recharging the card
Once the Multi card has been issued, it can be recharged at any time at one of the 3 service points, the issuing centre or one of the recharging sites.
Lost, damaged, stolen or defective card
- If your card is lost, damaged or stolen, go to one of the 3 service points to get a new Multi card and its contents for a fee of $10 (non-taxable). If your card had no cash value, a fee of $8 (non-taxable) is payable.
- If your Multi card is defective, it will be replaced at no charge.

Monthly pass
Unlimited travel for the entire month!
The monthly pass is loaded on the Multi. It gives you unlimited travel on the STO system for the entire month (from the first to the last day of the month). It is ideal if you take the bus often in a month.
You wish to get a monthly pass for the first time?
Check the conditions for obtaining a Multi before you go to one of the 3 service points or the issuing centre to get a Multi on which your pass will be loaded.
You already have a Multi?
You can recharge the card at any time at one of the 3 service points, the issuing centre or the different recharging sites. You can even recharge your pass for several months. Avoid the line-ups and recharge your card before the end of the month.
Passes are not refundable after their start date.
E-Wallet
Simple and easy to use, it can be loaded on your Multi card at your usual retail outlet.
The e-wallet:
- More savings
- No need to have change to take a bus
- Paperless transfers
- Can be transferred if it is lost or stolen
- Soon rechargeable on line
You can put from $10 to $50 in your e-wallet.
(At some recharging sites, the e-wallet can be loaded in dollar increments only.)
2 ways to use the e-wallet:
- To pay for occasional trips by means of an e-fare
- Combine it with your pass to pay for supplements on express and interzone routes
When you pass your card in front of the reader when boarding the bus, the reader:
- Confirms that your trip is valid
- Debits the fare or supplement from your e-wallet
- Displays the balance available on your e-wallet
A fare debited from your e-wallet entitles you to an e-transfer that is valid for 2 hours starting from when you first boarded an STO bus.
Simply pass your card in front of the reader again during the validity period and the transfer will be accepted.
See the Frequently Asked Questions for more details about the e-wallet.
Cash
Cash fare is a practical solution when you have to take the bus unexpectedly.
The exact fare in change is required. Pennies and bank notes are not accepted.
STO ID card is mandatory
You must show your Multi (or Passe-Partout PLUS) card to the driver when boarding the bus in order to benefit from the applicable reduced cash fare for seniors. Otherwise, the driver has the right to ask you to pay the difference between the reduced fare and the regular fare, which is $1.30.
Transfer
If you need to take more than one bus to reach your destination and are not using a Multi card, ask the driver for a transfer when you first board the bus.
You will not have to pay with an additional ticket or cash fare to take another bus.
The transfer is valid for 2 hours calculated from the time the bus leaves the terminus on the current trip. However, an exception applies to some trips on route 33 that have Les Promenades and Ottawa as the departure and arrival terminus, as well as all trips on route 96 in both directions. Riders on these trips are entitled to a transfer that is valid for 3 hours since the route is longer.
The transfer is accepted without a supplement when you use the regular STO system and the OC Transpo system. However, you must pay a supplement to take an express or interzone route.
